Answer summary: For most Alberta drivers, I'd buy the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Onyx. It costs $835 more than a Corolla Cross Hybrid SE on MSRP, but it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, it sits higher off the road and it comes with more gear. The Toyota still wins on fuel use and cargo space.

Key takeaways

  • The Corolla Cross Hybrid SE starts at $36,160 MSRP. The new Crosstrek Hybrid Onyx starts at $36,995.
  • NRCan rates the Toyota at 5.6 L/100 km combined and the Subaru at 6.5 L/100 km.
  • The Crosstrek Hybrid is a 2026 and 2027 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The Corolla Cross didn't make the 2026 list.
  • The Subaru has 220 mm of ground clearance. The Toyota has 203 mm.
  • Both come with all-wheel drive as standard in Canada.

A quick note before we start. This review is built on official Canadian prices, spec sheets, NRCan fuel ratings and IIHS crash tests, not a long-term road test. It's the advice I'd give a friend who asked me which small hybrid to buy before the snow gets serious.

Who the Crosstrek Hybrid vs Corolla Cross Hybrid Choice Is Really For

You want something smaller than a RAV4 or a CR-V. It has to fit in a downtown parkade, sip fuel on the commute and still get you to the ski hill in February.

Both of these are regular hybrids. They charge their own small battery as you drive, so there's no plug and no charger to install. If you've been eyeing a bigger hybrid SUV, our CR-V Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid review covers that class.

My Quick Verdict on the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid vs Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid in Canada

The Crosstrek Hybrid is the one I'd park in my own driveway. It's the safer pick on paper and the better fit for snowy side streets.

That doesn't make the Corolla Cross Hybrid a bad buy. It burns less fuel, it carries more stuff and it costs a little less. If most of your driving is on cleared city roads, it makes a lot of sense. It just gives up too much on safety scores and equipment for my taste.

2027 Crosstrek Hybrid and 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid Prices in Canada

MSRP is the sticker before fees. The next column is the all-in price each maker published, before tax. They aren't built the same way, so read the last column.

Trim MSRP Maker's all-in price What that price covers
Crosstrek Hybrid Onyx $36,995 $40,056 Subaru's national estimate with freight, PDI, A/C charge and maximum dealer fees
Crosstrek Hybrid Limited $40,495 $43,552 Same as above
Corolla Cross Hybrid SE AWD $36,160 $39,955 Toyota's Alberta price on Oct. 30, 2026, with fees and a $722 block heater
Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE AWD $38,985 $42,780 Same as above

Here's the catch. Toyota lists the Premium Plug-In Block Heater as mandatory in Alberta, so its Alberta price already has it baked in. Subaru's number doesn't include one. Take that $722 out and the Toyota's all-in lead grows.

My advice is simple. Compare the MSRP first. Then ask both dealers for an out-the-door quote in writing, with every fee and accessory listed on one page.

What the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Gets Right

  • Safety scores. The IIHS named the Crosstrek Hybrid a Top Safety Pick+ for 2026 and 2027. Its overall scores were Good in all the IIHS tests behind that award.
  • Ground clearance. Subaru lists 220 mm. That helps when the plow leaves a frozen ridge at the end of your driveway.
  • Range. It has a 63 L tank. On NRCan's 6.5 L/100 km combined rating, that's close to 970 km on paper. Subaru says up to 1,000 km.
  • The new Onyx trim. For 2027, Subaru added a Hybrid Onyx at $36,995. It's $1,600 more than the gas Onyx.
  • Lots of gear for the money. Subaru's spec sheet gives the Hybrid Onyx a heated steering wheel, a 10-way power driver's seat, a sunroof, an 11.6-inch screen with navigation, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and remote start through MySubaru.
  • Winter details. Every 2027 Crosstrek gets a wiper de-icer. Both hybrid trims also get electric heat and air conditioning.

Where the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Falls Short

  • Fuel use. At 6.5 L/100 km combined, it's 0.9 L/100 km thirstier than the Toyota on NRCan's numbers.
  • Cargo. Subaru lists 527 L behind the back seat. That's 37 L less than a gas Crosstrek, since the hybrid parts take up room.
  • No heated rear seats. Subaru's spec sheet only lists heated front seats. It doesn't list a power liftgate either.
  • The 360 camera is gone. Subaru's release says the Limited and Hybrid Limited lose it for 2027.
  • Only two hybrid trims. You can't get the hybrid on the cheaper Convenience or Touring.

What the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Gets Right

  • Lowest fuel use here. NRCan rates it at 5.2 city, 6.1 highway and 5.6 combined L/100 km. That's the lowest of any model in this story.
  • Price. The SE AWD starts at $36,160 MSRP, which is $835 less than the cheapest Crosstrek Hybrid.
  • More cargo room. Toyota lists 609 L, which beats the Subaru's 527 L. Makers can measure a little differently, so bring your stroller or hockey bag to the lot.
  • Power. Toyota rates the hybrid at 196 net hp. Subaru rates its hybrid at 194 hp, so this one's a tie.
  • Good basics on the SE. Toyota's list includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 10.5-inch screen, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and Blind Spot Monitor.
  • The XSE adds rear comfort. For $38,985, you get heated rear seats, a power back door, a moonroof and a 12.3-inch gauge cluster.

Where the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Falls Short

  • Safety scores. The IIHS rated the Corolla Cross Acceptable in its updated moderate overlap front test. The rear passenger results held it back, and it didn't make the 2026 Top Safety Pick list. The IIHS tested gas models and hasn't posted a separate hybrid rating.
  • Smaller tank. Toyota lists 40 L. That's about 715 km on paper at 5.6 L/100 km, so you'll stop for gas more often than in the Subaru.
  • Less clearance. Toyota lists 203 mm, which is 17 mm less than the Crosstrek.
  • The SE is plainer. It has a 7-inch gauge cluster, 17-inch wheels and no moonroof.

How the Crosstrek Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid Fit a Canadian Winter

Both hybrids come with AWD as standard in Canada. AWD gets you moving on a snowy hill. It won't help you stop or turn, and that's the job of winter tires. In Quebec they're the law from December 1 to March 15. Our guide to winter tire laws by province covers the rest of the country.

The Crosstrek's extra 17 mm won't turn it into a truck. Still, it's the kind of margin you notice on an unplowed back lane in Edmonton. Subaru's X-MODE with Hill Descent Control is standard on every Crosstrek too.

Toyota's Alberta price includes a plug-in block heater. For the Subaru, I couldn't confirm one, so ask the dealer before you sign. Here's when to plug in a block heater. And if you park at an apartment, test your stall's plug in October, not on the first cold snap.

Any hybrid uses more fuel in the cold, since the engine runs more to heat the cabin. Don't panic when your January numbers climb. Our piece on winter fuel use in Canada explains why. Road salt eats at any new car, too. Book a wash with an underbody rinse every couple of weeks from November to April, and do it on a mild day so the doors don't freeze shut.

What the Crosstrek Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid Cost to Own in Canada

Base to base, the sticker gap is only $835. Fuel is where the Toyota claws back more.

Try a simple example. Say you drive 15,000 km a year. The 0.9 L/100 km gap on NRCan's combined ratings works out to about 135 litres. At $1.50 a litre, the Toyota saves you around $200 a year. Your pump price will differ, and our fuel cost guide shows how to run it for your city.

I won't quote insurance here. It swings too much by province, age and postal code, so get two quotes before you buy. If you plan to sell in a few years, our look at Toyota resale value in Canada is worth a read.

The Crosstrek Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid Trims I Would Buy and Why

Crosstrek: the Hybrid Onyx at $36,995. You get the heated wheel, the power seat, the sunroof, the bigger screen and the digital gauges. The Hybrid Limited adds leather and costs $3,500 more, and I don't think that's worth it. Our 2027 Crosstrek price guide lists every trim.

Corolla Cross: the Hybrid XSE at $38,985, if you have kids in the back. Heated rear seats and a power back door are worth the extra $2,825 when it's -30°C and your hands are full. If it's just you and a partner, the SE is the smart money.

The Rivals Worth a Look Before You Sign

If fuel isn't your top worry, the gas Crosstrek and gas Corolla Cross AWD cost less up front. NRCan rates them at 8.1 and 7.8 L/100 km combined. Need more room? Look at the Subaru Forester Hybrid, or step up to a RAV4 Hybrid. You can also compare the Subaru Crosstrek and the Toyota Corolla Cross on their Vehonix pages, and our list of the lowest fuel consumption cars in Canada is a good place to start.

Final Verdict From Alok on the Crosstrek Hybrid vs Corolla Cross Hybrid

My money goes on the Crosstrek Hybrid Onyx. The Top Safety Pick+ rating, the extra clearance and the long range matter more to me in an Alberta winter than a few hundred dollars of fuel.

Buy the Corolla Cross Hybrid if you drive mostly in the city, need the bigger cargo area or want the lowest fuel bill. It's a sensible car. I'd just like to see a better back seat crash score.

One last thing. Budget for a set of winter tires on their own rims the day you buy either car. In a Tim Hortons lineup at -25°C, those tires are what get you rolling again, not the logo on the grille.
