The Toyota RAV4 has been a fixture of Canadian driveways since 1996, and Toyota Canada says more than 940,000 of them have reached our roads since then. For 2026, the RAV4 starts over with a sixth generation, and the changes go deeper than new sheet metal. Every 2026 RAV4 is electrified, every one sold here comes with all-wheel drive, and the hybrid models are assembled in Woodstock, Ontario.
Here is what is new, what it costs, and who should be paying attention.
Built in Ontario, bought everywhere
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) started building the sixth-generation RAV4 for the North American market in January 2026. Toyota says it invested more than $1.1 billion in the new model, bringing its total investment in Canada to more than $12 billion. TMMC has produced more than four million RAV4s since it assembled its first one in 2009, and Toyota Canada states that all 2026 RAV4 hybrid models sold in this country are assembled there.
The stakes are high. The RAV4 is the best-selling compact SUV in Canada and, according to Toyota Canada, the top-selling passenger vehicle in the country once pickup trucks are set aside. When a model this popular changes generations, it shifts what a lot of families will be driving for the next decade.
Hybrid only, with more power
The gas-only RAV4 is gone. The 2026 lineup is made up entirely of hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
The standard powertrain is the fifth generation of the Toyota Hybrid System, which pairs a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with electric motors. Toyota says its engineers reworked almost every component, including new transaxles, power control units and batteries. The payoff is 236 net system horsepower, up from 219 hp in the outgoing hybrid.
Efficiency moved in the right direction too. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) rates the RAV4 LE AWD at 5.5 L/100 km combined (5.1 city, 6.0 highway). Even the rugged Woodland, with its all-terrain tires, comes in at 6.2 L/100 km combined.
The plug-in hybrid, whose Canadian pricing was announced in March 2026, uses a new-generation PHEV system rated at 324 hp. NRCan lists an all-electric range of up to 89 km for the SE grade. We cover the hybrid-versus-plug-in decision in a separate guide, with every rating side by side.
All-wheel drive is standard on every 2026 RAV4 sold in Canada, which settles one of the most common questions shoppers ask before winter.

Three personalities instead of one
Toyota now splits the RAV4 into three design families:
- Core: LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Limited.
- Adventure: the Woodland.
- Sport: XSE and XSE Technology Package, plus the plug-in-only GR SPORT.
The Woodland gets the most dramatic makeover. New for 2026 are 18-inch black wheels on all-terrain tires, unique bumpers, grille, skid plate and over-fenders, Rigid Industries LED fog lamps, and Side IP storage units for modular accessories. It also keeps practical touches such as a 120V/1500W outlet in the cargo area, all-weather mats and a tow hitch. Two grade-exclusive colours, Urban Rock and Everest, can be paired with Black or Mineral interiors.
The XSE goes in the opposite direction, with its own front fascia, bumpers, over-fenders and mirrors, 20-inch black alloys, vertical LED accent lights and three new two-tone paint schemes with a black roof.
Underneath, Toyota says the chassis gains added frame rigidity and new suspension components for a smoother, easier-to-handle drive.
A real jump in cabin tech
Even the entry LE now gets a 10.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch multi-information display, along with heated front seats, two-zone automatic climate control with rear A/C ducts, the Smart Key System with push-button start and LED headlights. Limited and XSE grades step up to a 12.9-inch screen.
The new Toyota Multimedia system is the first from Toyota to integrate 5G connectivity, and it runs on the Arene software platform developed by Woven by Toyota, which the company describes as the foundation for the RAV4's safety, security and connectivity features. Expect customizable widgets on the home screen, personalized user profiles, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a "Hey Toyota" voice assistant, and turn-by-turn navigation shown full screen on the digital gauge cluster. A built-in Drive Recorder, which can use the exterior cameras to capture events, is now standard.
Connected services arrive as trials. On the LE, Safety Connect and Service Connect run for five years and Remote Connect for three.

Safety: TSS 4.0 arrives
Every 2026 RAV4 gets Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, which Toyota says updates detection capabilities for systems such as the Pre-Collision System and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard across the lineup.
Move up the range and you can add Traffic Jam Assist (it requires an active Drive Connect subscription), Lane Change Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert with Braking, Advanced Park and the Panoramic View Monitor. The Limited and the XSE Technology Package carry the full set.
Pricing starts at $37,500
Toyota Canada priced the 2026 RAV4 hybrid lineup from $37,500 MSRP for the LE AWD up to $52,450 for the XSE Technology Package. The plug-in hybrid starts at $48,750, which Toyota says is lower than the starting MSRP of the 2025 plug-in models.
Toyota also publishes an estimated vehicle price that adds freight and PDI, the A/C charge, and maximum dealer and other fees, while excluding taxes, licence, insurance and registration. For the LE, that figure is $41,158. Our trim-by-trim price guide breaks down all 11 configurations.
Who should pay attention
If you drive an older RAV4 hybrid, the main reasons to upgrade are the leap in screens and software, TSS 4.0, and modest gains in power and efficiency. If you were counting on a gas RAV4 to keep costs down, that option no longer exists, though the LE hybrid's $37,500 MSRP and 5.5 L/100 km rating soften the blow considerably.
Adventure-minded buyers finally get a Woodland that looks and feels distinct, rather than a trim package. And if you want to plug in at home, the new PHEV's longer electric range and lower starting price make it a stronger case than it was a year ago.
