The Toyota 4Runner has always been the body-on-frame SUV for people who actually use the "sport utility" part. The sixth generation made its Canadian debut at the Toronto auto show in February 2025, bringing the first hybrid 4Runner along with new Platinum and Trailhunter grades. For the 2026 Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Canada has refined the lineup rather than reinventing it, adding standard equipment to a key off-road grade and offering a new colour on the TRD Pro.

Here is a full look at the 2026 4Runner as it is sold in Canada.

Built on the same bones as Toyota's trucks

The current 4Runner rides on Toyota's TNGA-F global truck platform, the same architecture used by the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. That means a body-on-frame layout, a choice of on-demand or full-time four-wheel drive depending on the grade, and real towing ability.

Two turbocharged powertrains are offered:

  • i-FORCE 2.4L turbo: 278 horsepower and up to 317 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of up to 6,000 lb (2,722 kg).
  • i-FORCE MAX hybrid: the same 2.4L turbo paired with an electric motor, for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. It is rated to tow up to 5,800 lb (2,631 kg).

NRCan lists both with an eight-speed automatic transmission and regular fuel.

Nine grades, two personalities

The 2026 4Runner comes in nine grades. Four use the gas i-FORCE engine: SR5, Limited, TRD Sport and TRD Off Road Premium. Five use the i-FORCE MAX hybrid: TRD Off Road Premium, Platinum, Platinum with fixed running boards, TRD Pro and Trailhunter.

Seating varies too. The SR5 and Limited have three rows and seat seven. The other grades use two rows and seat five. With the rear seats folded, Toyota quotes up to 2,554 L (90.2 cu ft) of cargo space behind the front row.

What is new for 2026

The changes are focused, but useful:

  • TRD Off Road Premium upgrades: a trailer brake controller and a digital rear-view mirror are now standard on both the gas and i-FORCE MAX versions of this grade. If you tow, an integrated brake controller saves you an aftermarket install.
  • New TRD Pro colour: Wave Maker joins the TRD Pro palette, and a Cockpit Red interior is available.
  • Heritage colours elsewhere: the Limited is offered in Heritage Blue with a Portobello interior, while the TRD Sport in Underground pairs with Anodized Blue interior trim.

Looking further ahead, Toyota Canada has already announced a Hot Honey exterior colour for the 2027 4Runner TRD Pro.

Still a 4Runner where it counts

Some things haven't changed, and fans will be glad. The power roll-down rear window is still there, and the wrap-over quarter glass recalls 4Runners of the past.

Off-road hardware depends on the grade. The TRD Off Road Premium gets Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor, 18-inch off-road wheels with a full-size spare and underbody protection.

The TRD Pro moves up to FOX three-setting shocks, a front stabilizer bar disconnect, an aluminum front skid plate, a heritage-inspired grille with an LED light bar, a TRD air intake and cat-back exhaust, and 265/70R18 Toyo Open Country A/T tires.

The Trailhunter takes an overlanding angle with Old Man Emu shocks, a high-mount air intake, rock rails, a roof rack, steel skid plates, an onboard air compressor and dual-colour Rigid fog lamps.

Comfort and technology

The SR5 starts with an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch multi-information display, heated front seats and 17-inch alloys. The Limited is where the 4Runner turns plush, with a 14-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, adaptive variable suspension, 20-inch wheels, leather, heated and ventilated front seats with memory, a moonroof, a wireless charger and a JBL audio system with a removable Flex speaker for the campsite.

At the top of the range, the hybrid Platinum adds full-time 4WD, power running boards, semi-aniline leather, heated second-row seats, a head-up display, a 2,400 W AC outlet and Trailer Backup Guide with Straight Path Assist.

Safety

Every 2026 4Runner comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, eight airbags, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and a backup camera with Back Guide Monitor and a camera washer, a small detail that Canadians who drive on salted winter roads will appreciate.

Pricing

The 2026 4Runner starts at $55,270 MSRP for the SR5 and tops out at $85,304 for the i-FORCE MAX Trailhunter. Toyota's estimated vehicle prices, which include freight and PDI, the A/C charge and maximum dealer fees but exclude taxes, range from $58,928 to $88,962. Our separate price guide covers all nine grades.

The verdict

The 2026 4Runner is less a new chapter than a well-edited one. The key upgrade is the standard trailer brake controller and digital mirror on the TRD Off Road Premium, which makes that grade an even better buy for anyone who tows. For everyone else, the 4Runner remains one of the few midsize SUVs that is truly built on truck hardware, and the hybrid i-FORCE MAX, with 465 lb-ft on tap, gives it serious low-end muscle for towing and climbing.
