Answer summary: For most Canadian families, I'd buy the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. It starts $8,500 lower than the cheapest CR-V Hybrid, uses less fuel on NRCan's ratings and makes more power. The Honda CR-V Hybrid still makes sense if you want its top Touring trim or a gas CR-V for less money.

Key takeaways

  • The RAV4 Hybrid starts at $37,500 MSRP. The CR-V Hybrid starts at $46,000 MSRP.
  • NRCan rates the RAV4 LE at 5.5 L/100 km combined and the CR-V Hybrid at 6.4 L/100 km.
  • The RAV4 hybrid makes 236 hp, and the CR-V hybrid makes 204 hp.
  • Both hybrids come with all-wheel drive as standard in Canada.
  • Neither one is an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2026. The CR-V scored Poor in one key US crash test.

A quick note before we start. This review is built on official Canadian prices, NRCan fuel ratings and IIHS crash tests, not a long-term road test. What follows is what I'd tell a friend who asked me which one to buy this winter.

Who the CR-V Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid Choice Is Really For

You want one small SUV that handles everything. School drop-off, a hockey bag in the back, the Saturday Costco run and the Christmas drive down the QEII from Edmonton to Calgary.

Both of these are regular hybrids, so they charge their own battery as you drive. You never plug them in. For a lot of Canadians, that's the whole appeal.

My Quick Verdict on the Honda CR-V Hybrid vs Toyota RAV4 Hybrid in Canada

The RAV4 Hybrid gives you more for less. It's cheaper to buy, it's rated to burn less fuel and it has more power under your right foot.

Don't read that as "the CR-V is bad." It isn't. It's a good SUV with a smooth hybrid system. The trouble is the price gap at the low end, which is hard to ignore. If it were my money, I'd start my search at the Toyota dealer.

2026 Prices in Canada for Every RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid Trim

MSRP is the sticker before fees. The second column is the price each maker's own website showed for Alberta on October 28, 2026, before tax.

Trim MSRP Alberta price on maker's site (Oct. 28, 2026)
RAV4 LE AWD $37,500 $41,380.40
RAV4 XLE AWD $41,300 $45,180.40
RAV4 XLE Premium AWD $43,800 $47,679.40 (XLE plus the $2,499 package)
RAV4 Woodland AWD $47,000 $50,880.40
RAV4 XSE AWD $50,900 $54,780.40
RAV4 Limited AWD $52,000 Not checked
RAV4 XSE Technology AWD $52,450 Not checked
CR-V Sport Hybrid AWD $46,000 $49,130
CR-V TrailSport Hybrid AWD $47,400 $50,530
CR-V EX-L Hybrid AWD $48,800 $51,930
CR-V Touring Hybrid AWD $51,300 $54,430

Those Alberta prices aren't built the same way, so don't compare them line by line. Toyota's Alberta price includes $1,930 for delivery and destination and a Premium Plug-In Block Heater of up to $802.40. It leaves out dealer fees of up to $999. Honda's Alberta price includes $2,000 for freight and PDI and other fees of up to $1,130.

So here's my advice. Compare the MSRP first. Then ask both dealers for an out-the-door quote in writing, and make sure it lists every fee.

What the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Gets Right

  • Price. The LE starts at $37,500, which is $8,500 less than the cheapest CR-V Hybrid.
  • NRCan rates the LE at 5.1 city, 6.0 highway and 5.5 combined L/100 km.
  • Power. Toyota rates the hybrid at 236 net hp. You'll feel that when you pull out to pass a semi on a two-lane highway.
  • Toyota says every 2026 RAV4 hybrid sold here is built in Ontario.
  • Even the base LE gets heated front seats, a 10.5-inch screen and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, based on Toyota's list.

Where the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Falls Short

  • The top trims got pricey. Driving.ca pointed out that a 2026 Limited costs about $4,900 more, with fees, than a similar 2025 model.
  • There's no gas-only RAV4 anymore. Every one is a hybrid or a plug-in, which is fine for most people, but it means the cheapest way in is now $37,500.
  • It's not a Top Safety Pick. The IIHS gave it Acceptable, not Good, in its updated moderate overlap front test. The rear seat dummy is what held it back.
  • It's new and it sells fast, so you may wait a while for the colour and trim you want.

What the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Gets Right

  • You can pick from four hybrid trims: Sport, TrailSport, EX-L and Touring.
  • TrailSport for gravel. Honda says the new TrailSport Hybrid comes with all-terrain tires and more rugged styling. Handy if your weekends end on a range road.
  • Not sold on a hybrid? A gas CR-V costs less. Honda's site shows the LX AWD at $43,010 in Alberta with fees.
  • Honda says the CR-V Hybrid is Canada's best-selling hybrid SUV.
  • Fuel use is still good. NRCan rates the Sport, EX-L and Touring hybrids at 6.0 city, 6.9 highway and 6.4 combined L/100 km.

Where the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Falls Short

  • Price of entry. The cheapest CR-V Hybrid is $46,000. That's a big jump over a base RAV4 Hybrid.
  • The crash test. This is the part Honda won't put in the ads. The IIHS rated the CR-V Poor in its updated moderate overlap front test. The front seats did fine. The weak spot was the rear passenger.
  • Honda rates the hybrid at 204 hp, which leaves it 32 hp behind the RAV4.
  • The IIHS notes this CR-V was redesigned for 2023, so it isn't the newest shape on the lot. Here's what we know about the 2028 Honda CR-V.

How the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid Fit a Canadian Winter

Both hybrids come with AWD as standard in Canada. AWD helps you get moving on a snowy hill. It won't help you stop or turn, and that's the job of good winter tires. In Quebec they're the law from December 1 to March 15. Our guide to winter tire laws by province covers the rest of the country.

Every hybrid burns more fuel in the cold, because the engine runs more to heat the cabin and warm the battery. So don't panic when your numbers climb in January. Our article on winter fuel use in Canada explains why.

If you park outside at -30°C, you'll want a block heater. Toyota's Alberta pricing includes a Premium Plug-In Block Heater in the price it shows for the RAV4. For the CR-V, I couldn't confirm one, so ask the Honda dealer before you sign. Here's when to plug in a block heater. Living in an apartment? Check that your stall has a working plug before winter, not on the first cold snap.

Salt is the other Alberta reality. After a week of slush on the Henday, a trip through the car wash with an underbody rinse is cheap insurance for any new SUV.

Driving gravel range roads? Look at the RAV4 Woodland or the CR-V TrailSport, since both have all-terrain tires. Just know that tougher tires cost some fuel. NRCan rates the Woodland at 6.2 L/100 km and the TrailSport at 6.7 L/100 km.

What the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid Cost to Own in Canada

The sticker gap is the big one. Base to base, the RAV4 is $8,500 cheaper on MSRP.

Fuel adds up too, though more slowly. On NRCan's combined ratings, the base RAV4 uses 0.9 L/100 km less than the CR-V Sport Hybrid. Drive 20,000 km a year and that's about 180 litres. At $1.50 a litre, you'd save about $270 a year. Your price at the pump will vary, and our fuel cost guide shows how to run the math for your city.

I won't give insurance numbers here. They swing too much by province, age and postal code. Get two quotes before you buy.

The RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid Trims I Would Buy and Why

RAV4: the XLE at $41,300. Toyota's list shows it adds a power driver's seat, a heated steering wheel, a power back door and a wireless charger. Grab a frozen steering wheel at -30°C once and you'll understand why I'd pay for the heated one. Pair it with remote start if your dealer offers it. Our full RAV4 price guide lists every trim.

CR-V: the EX-L Hybrid at $48,800, if your heart is set on a Honda. It sits in the middle of the range and shares the 6.4 L/100 km rating with the Sport Hybrid. Go through the feature list with your dealer before you sign.

The Rivals Worth a Look Before You Sign

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, the Kia Sportage Hybrid and the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid all deserve a test drive. If you can plug in at home, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid might suit you better. You can also line up the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V on their Vehonix pages.

Final Verdict From Alok on the CR-V Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid

My money goes on the RAV4 Hybrid XLE. It wins all three of the counts I listed up top, and that doesn't happen often in this class.

The CR-V Hybrid still has a place, though. Buy it if you love how it drives on your test drive, if you want the Touring's features, or if a Honda dealer gives you a much better deal. Just look at that back seat crash score first.

Whichever one ends up in your driveway, put good winter tires on it before anything else. They'll do more for you in an Alberta winter than any badge on the back.
