Updated October 19, 2026. Engine oil is a hot search in Canada this week. That makes sense. It is the time of year when people book winter tires and get the car ready for the cold. Oil is the cheapest thing you can do for your engine, and the easiest to get wrong. Here is what the carmakers say, what CAA says, and what I tell anyone who asks me.
Do you need an oil change before winter?
CAA's winter car care advice is simple. If it has been about six months since your last oil change, get it done before winter.
That lines up with what most carmakers ask for. Toyota Canada says its vehicles need maintenance every 6 months or 8,000 km, whichever comes first. That visit is not always a full oil change. But it is a good reminder that time counts, not just distance. A car that sits a lot still needs care.
My rule is plain. If your tires are going on at the shop anyway, ask them to look at the oil at the same visit. One trip, two jobs.
Trust the oil life light, but not for the level
Many new cars show an oil life number on the dash. Honda calls its system the Maintenance Minder. Honda Canada says it works out oil life from engine sensors, speed, temperature and how often you drive in hard conditions. When oil life drops to 15%, a "Service Due Soon" message comes on.
Here is the part people miss. Honda Canada says the system does not check how much oil is in the engine. It only guesses how worn the oil is. An engine can still run low. So you still need to check the level yourself.
Short trips in the cold are hard on oil. The engine never gets fully warm. That is one reason oil life can drop faster in winter than the odometer suggests.
How to check your oil in 2 minutes
Honda's owner's manual for the CR-V suggests checking the oil every time you fill up. That is a good habit for any car. Here is how:
- Park on flat ground.
- Turn the engine off and wait about three minutes.
- Pull out the dipstick. It usually has a bright yellow or orange handle.
- Wipe it clean with a paper towel.
- Push it all the way back in, then pull it out again.
- The oil should sit between the two marks.
If it is near or below the low mark, add a little oil at a time. Do not overfill. Honda also notes that on some engines the level can rise above the top mark under certain driving conditions. If that happens, ask a dealer.

Some newer cars have no dipstick at all. They show the oil level on the dash screen. Your owner's manual will tell you which kind you have.
What do 0W-20 and 5W-30 mean?
The numbers on the bottle tell you how thick the oil is.
- The first number, with the W, is for cold starts. W stands for winter. A lower number means the oil flows more easily when the engine is cold.
- The second number is how thick the oil is once the engine is warm.
On a cold Canadian morning, the first minutes matter most. Thin oil reaches the moving parts faster. That is why many new cars use a 0W oil.
But do not pick a grade on your own. Use the grade in your owner's manual or on the oil cap. For example, Honda's 2026 CR-V owner's manual calls for 0W-20 oil with the API service SN rating or higher. It holds about 3.5 litres with a new filter. Your car may be different.
Synthetic, additives and the warranty
Synthetic oil. Honda's manual says synthetic oil is fine if it has the API seal and the right grade.
Additives. Skip them. Honda's CR-V manual says the vehicle does not need oil additives and that they may hurt engine performance and durability.
Warranty. Keep your receipts. Toyota Canada's warranty guide says it does not cover damage caused by fluids, oil or lubricants other than those in the owner's manual. It also says repairs caused by missed maintenance are not covered. A receipt with the date, the distance and the oil grade is your proof.
Good oil also helps your fuel use
Using the right oil is one of the small things that keeps your car running as rated. Natural Resources Canada has long told drivers to check fluids once a month and change the oil as the owner's manual says. In winter, fuel use already goes up. You do not want to add to it. Our winter fuel use guide explains why, and our tips to lower fuel consumption show the habits that save the most. To see what your car really uses, start with our fuel consumption guide.
Do not dump old oil
If you change your own oil, bring the old oil, the filter and the empty jugs to a drop-off point. In Quebec, SOGHU runs free drop-off points at garages and city depots across the province. Its website has a locator by postal code. Other provinces have their own programs. Ask your city or the shop where you bought the oil.
A note for truck and fleet owners
If you have seen "PC-12" in the news, it is not about your car. PC-12 is a new class of heavy-duty diesel engine oil. Petro-Canada Lubricants says the first oils under it can be licensed from January 1, 2027. It is meant for big diesel trucks, not for gas cars and SUVs.
What about electric cars?
A battery electric car has no engine oil to change. A hybrid or plug-in hybrid still has a gas engine, so it still needs oil. Follow the schedule in the manual.
My short checklist for this fall
- Check the date and distance on your last oil change sticker.
- If it has been about six months, book an oil change with your winter tires.
- Check the level yourself once a month, or at every fill-up.
- Use only the grade your manual lists.
- Keep every receipt.
- Recycle the old oil.

FAQ
How often should I change my oil in Canada? Follow your owner's manual or your oil life display. Toyota Canada asks for maintenance every 6 months or 8,000 km. CAA suggests an oil change before winter if it has been about six months.
Is 0W-20 good for winter? A 0W oil flows well in the cold. But only use 0W-20 if your manual lists it.
Does the oil life light check my oil level? Not on Honda models, says Honda Canada. It estimates oil wear only. Check the level yourself.
Can I use synthetic oil? Yes, if it meets the grade and rating in your manual.
Do electric cars need oil changes? A fully electric car has no engine oil. Hybrids still do.
